Stanway Badminton Club

Thank you for visiting our website! We are the only badminton club in Colchester entering teams in the Essex league as well as the local Colchester Federation and District leagues. As well as playing competitive matches we have a well attended club night where we aim to have some fun, get some exercise and socialise.

The club runs a junior section with a team of UKCC certified coaches from age 11 until 15. We are also working towards achieving Clubmark status.

Among our members we have junior, senior and veteran county players and our local league teams compete at all levels. We are able to offer coaching and advice to help players that want to develop their game. Our new Monday night sessions are ideal for beginners and intermediate players (those without any competitive experience) or for those getting back into the game after an break.

Club Nights

The club meets at Stanway School every Tuesday evening during school term time (September - May) starting at 7:30pm. Anyone interested in joining the club should contact the club secretary (see contacts) or pop down on a Tuesday night to say hello.

We also run a beginners / intermediate level club on a 'pay-as-u-play' basis on Monday nights from 8pm - 10pm every week during school term. This is a new initiative for 2011/12 season and we are very keen to attract new members. There is no requirement to join the club to take part in these sessions, just pay £4 each night you attend. Coaching is available for those that wish to learn more about the technique and tactics of badminton.

Junior Badminton

Our junior club runs from September - April during school term, every Monday 6:30 - 8pm. Anyone interested should contact Simon on 07746 380813.

We also run a Development Squad for experienced junior players that wish to further their skills and ideally graduate into the senior club. This runs every Tuesday from 7pm. Contact Simon on 07746 380813.

All junior players should keep an eye on the News section for details of forthcoming tournaments.

The Stanway Story

Stanway Badminton Club was formed in 1969 from members of the Rosemary Tennis Club, led by Mr E. Spurgeon, that wished to play badminton in the new Stanway village hall. In that first year the club played socially and the subscriptions were £2 15s 0d in old money.

Things have come a long way since then and we now have three Men's, a Mixed and a Ladies team in the Colchester & East Essex Badminton Federation, a team in the Colchester & District and we enter the Essex County Badminton league's Men's, Mixed and Combination.

We first entered a league team in 1971, Vic Little was captain and match fees we set at 17.5p! In 1974 we moved to play at the new sports hall at Stanway (Secondary Modern) School and it has remained our home venue ever since.

In 1976 Vic Little took over the position of Club Secretary a position he held until 2009 a total of 33 years. That was also the year when we first entered the Colchester & District League, which was at that time the more prestigious competition in the area.
